Having a successful local business as well as several internet businesses, I am often asked about how to best develop a business on the web. While there are many answers and directions for this huge topic, there is one activity that I always recommend and that is blogging. That is also the one activity that most people do not understand the necessity for, until I explain the importance of this function.

Since I have opened that can of worms, let’s delve into why blogging is important for you and the development of a small business on the internet.

Adding a blog element to your website has many positive aspects. Let’s look at a few.

  • Google loves fresh content. If your business is not a retail site, chances are you may not have new products to feature or sell which would be added to your site on a regular basis. If you are a consultant or something similar, adding fresh copy to your site may be few and far between which could hurt your site. Blogging will give you a voice to update your site with tips and articles on topics you are passionate about.
  • A business blog will allow for many people in your company to add articles and features for publication. This will give your company a strong team voice and unity as a business. Different points of view and expertise will make your blog a diverse and interesting read.
  • Blogging will help you become an expert in your industry. After all, your business is your expertise so you may as well show it to your customers and future customers. New and current customers want to partner with successful entrepreneurs and if you are showing your skills and knowledge in your blogs, that could bring even more business your way.
  • Adding fresh content and relevant through blogging on a consistent basis will help your traffic increase and therefore even more eyes will be on your site. Are you offering the right copy on the front end to convert as needed? Know what you are asking for from your readers and make sure your copy offers the content needed to convert.
  • Blogging in your small business is also a great way to stay on top of your industry and the changes that are occurring. Being able to share your thoughts and the changes will keep you in the know and your readers too
  • Converse with your readers and find out what they are thinking through comments on your blog. You can be converse one and one and get to know what they want and what they are looking for too. Feedback on topics is invaluable and can even led you into more topics to write about as well.

Blogging is a necessary component for any successful business small and large. Fortune 500 businesses and small independent business that embrace it can see results from a consistent program. Your business should also set up a plan for best results.
