I was thinking about success the other day and what it actually means to people. I’ve had many conversations over the years about success and no one really has a definite indicator of when you reach “success”.
The Oxford dictionary defines success simply; “the accomplishments of an aim or purpose.”
That leaves it wide open to interpretation for individuals. We could be talking about fame, wealth, social status or a number of other indicators.
That also means everyone’s definition of success is going to be different.
• For some it could be the attainment of a certain amount of money.
• For some it could be a landmark change in your business.
• For others it could be the ability to purchase a social symbol like a particular brand of expensive car.
• Maybe success means the ability to have the freedom to work when and where you want two.
But also brings to mind a great conversation starter which is “what does success look like to you?”
I’ve used this in a number of conversations and the range of answers is fabulous. We can’t put a dollar amount on success. We can’t put a status symbol on it. However, we can put a feeling on it.
Hopefully success makes you feel good about your accomplishments. Hopefully it frees you up to spend time with friends and family. Maybe you can travel a bit more. Perhaps hire someone to help with some duties.
No matter how you personally define success, most people think the true gauge of whether you’ve reached it or not is what you feel about your job and your overall quality of life.
What would your definition of success be right now at this stage in your life?
What more do you need to do or want to do to reach that pinnacle that would have you saying I think that was a successful fill in…..?
