I can't tell you how many times I have been asked how I manage my content and my social media postings along with my normal business work. While I could tell you time management is the only way to do it. But in actuality I use an editorial calendar to help me manage and focus on content, not only for my website, but also for my social media.

What is an editorial calendar?

It's basically a tool that will help you plan your content and keep your ideas and workflow progress in one place. There are professional ones such as DivvyHQ which allows multiple calendars and users to set up and modify your calendars. You can utilize it to see what's in the planning stage, what is in production, and where it is in terms of being reviewed or maybe in need of an image attached etc. There's also one called CoSchedule. This also allows you to manage a calendar of upcoming posts but it also allows you to share your posts through social media. It'll even allow you to use their Wordpress plug-in to simplify cross posting across your social media channels. You can also plan your own and create something easily through Word or Excel, which is what I do.

How do you use the Editorial Calendar for most impact?

Things you want to focus on would be article ideas and topics. Social media ideas and topics. Perhaps keyword research and planning out when and how to use them.

Editorial calendars are also great for planning ahead for special events, holidays, promotions, guest posts, and any other things that you need to work on for special publication.

Why create on the fly?

Content and social media can be difficult to create on-the-fly. By using an editorial calendar you can work ahead and plan out the content your business needs and your followers crave. Plus you can incorporate and allow other team mates to use and collaborate on the calendar as well for a well rounded effect.

You can easily save time and be mmroe effective when using an editorial calendar and working ahead.
